Gareth Thomas Biography for Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare
Dr. Gareth Thomas has deep roots in the South Wales Valley, having been raised there since the age of six. His proud Welsh heritage reflects a legacy of coal miners and steelworkers, embodying the hard work and resilience of his ancestors. Born into a military family, with both parents serving and grandfathers who fought in World War II, Gareth was destined to follow in their footsteps. He enlisted in the military soon after leaving school but faced an unexpected turn when he was medically discharged due to a spinal cord injury, leading to lifelong use of a wheelchair. A devoted family man, Gareth is married and enjoys the company of his grown son, granddaughter, and an upcoming grandchild.
A Multifaceted Career in Service and Advocacy
After his military service, Gareth embarked on a diverse career as an entrepreneur, model, professional photographer, and academic, earning three degrees in psychology along the way. He holds multiple therapy diplomas, enabling him to provide essential mental health treatment to those in need. In the past five years, Gareth has emerged as a prominent mental health advocate, founding a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals facing mental health challenges. Additionally, he serves as a director of a charity focused on assisting disabled individuals, veterans, and the able-bodied alike.
Political Journey: From Disappointment to Determination
Gareth’s political journey began with his involvement in the Liberal Democrats, which spanned two decades. However, after the party’s coalition with the Conservatives in 2010, he lost faith in their leadership. His political views evolved further when he voted to leave the European Union in 2016 and supported the Conservatives in the 2019 election. Yet, following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in 2020, Gareth became disillusioned with the Conservative Party’s performance.
