Dr George Woodward Biography for Leigh and Atherton

About George Woodward

George Woodward embodies the quintessential Briton. Born in Oxfordshire, George spent his early years in London before growing up in central Scotland. His academic journey took him to Glasgow for university, after which he returned to England for work and now resides in Newton. His family roots span across Britain, with two of his great-grandparents hailing from Hartford, Cheshire.

Academic and Professional Background

George pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at university, where he particularly excelled in research-focused aspects. His passion for metallurgy led him to continue with a doctorate, focusing on the crystallographic phases of ferrous alloys for industrial applications.

Hobbies and Interests

In his free time, George enjoys amateur photography, particularly at Pennington Flash, and plays the drums. His musical interests range from heavy metal, which he grew up playing, to jazz.

Political Views and Engagement

George has always had a keen interest in politics. His political views have evolved from liberal in his teenage years to a more right-leaning stance as he matured. A staunch believer in British sovereignty, George voted to leave the EU in 2016, supported the Brexit Party in 2019, and cast his vote for Boris Johnson in the 2019 General Election, driven by the hope of achieving Brexit. He values democracy and supports referenda as a means to let the people have a say.

Commitment to Reform

In 2023, George joined Reform after feeling disillusioned with the Conservative Party's performance on Brexit, immigration, taxes, and the NHS. He decided to stand for election in the Leigh & Atherton constituency, an area he knows well and feels has been let down by both Tory and Labour governments. With a perpetually Labour-controlled council, George sees a need for independent voices to make a real difference.

Environmental and Local Concerns

George is deeply passionate about environmental issues, a value rooted in his upbringing in rural Scotland. He advocates for the preservation of green spaces, criticizing the overdevelopment in the Leigh & Atherton area, which includes Lowton, Golborne, and Tyldesley. He is concerned about the impact of overdevelopment on local quality of life, with issues like overcrowded schools, traffic congestion, a lack of social housing, and a deteriorating high street.

Addressing Overdevelopment and Immigration

George argues that mass immigration has exacerbated problems in the area, including reduced wages, inflated house prices, and a dilution of British culture. He questions the need for numerous cash-only barber shops and emphasizes the need for reform to address these issues.

Call to Action

Traditional red-wall voters have been let down by both Labour and Tory parties. With significant challenges facing Leigh, Atherton, Lowton, Golborne, and Tyldesley, George Woodward believes that Reform offers the change needed for a better future.
