Les Willis Biography for Swindon North
Extensive Experience in Public Service
Les Willis has been a prominent figure in Swindon since 1985, dedicating 21 years of his career to working with adults with learning difficulties within the NHS. His extensive experience has provided him with firsthand insight into the inefficiencies and financial waste prevalent in the system.
Political Leadership and Community Commitment
Having served on the town council and as Town Mayor of Wootton Bassett, Les has demonstrated a deep commitment to his community. Wootton Bassett, a small town near Swindon, has greatly benefited from his leadership and dedication.
Revitalizing Swindon’s Manufacturing and Retail Sectors
Les recognizes Swindon’s historical significance as a leading manufacturing town and is committed to restoring its former glory. If elected, he plans to collaborate with Swindon Council to promote the resurgence of skilled manufacturing. Additionally, he supports the Reform Party’s initiative to revive apprenticeships, which will foster local talent and industry growth.
Reviving the Town Centre
The town centre shopping area of Swindon has suffered from a decline in foot traffic. Les aims to work with the local council to rejuvenate this area by attracting new, smaller shops. He also proposes introducing free parking in the town centre, a strategy that has proven effective in out-of-town shopping areas, to encourage more shoppers to visit.
Strengthening the NHS
Les is committed to enhancing the NHS by improving hospitals and doctors' surgeries, making healthcare more accessible to the public. His focus will be on increasing funding and support for essential services.
Protecting the Environment
Les is passionate about environmental conservation and is dedicated to combating pollution. He will advocate for stricter regulations to prevent water companies from polluting rivers and seas and will work to reduce pollution levels in urban areas.
Fiscal Responsibility and Reform
The Reform Party, supported by Les and its candidates, aims to address the national debt and improve essential services by eliminating financial waste. For example, Les advocates for cutting the £6 billion overseas aid budget to countries with space programs, such as China and India, to redirect funds towards crucial domestic needs.
