Chris Clowes Biography, Parliamentary Candidate for Rutland and Stamford

Preserving Local Heritage and Community

Chris Clowes is dedicated to protecting the unique character of Rutland, Stamford, and the surrounding areas he represents. After fourteen years of Conservative governance, he believes that the essence of the places he cherishes is increasingly under threat. Growing up near Billesdon, Clowes enjoyed the area's stunning landscapes and historic towns. The region's charm, from its sporting heroes to its rich medieval and Georgian heritage, is something he deeply values. He fondly recalls traditions like the Medbourne-Hallaton bottlekicking on Easter Monday and local point-to-point races as cherished memories.

Commitment to Community and Addressing Local Challenges

Clowes has actively volunteered to support the elderly and disabled, learning firsthand the importance of community in the face of sweeping changes. He notes the struggles of the NHS, rising unemployment, and the challenges faced by small businesses as contributing to the erosion of local communities. He observes that many towns and villages are becoming service and pub deserts, further diminishing community spirit.

Advocating for Rural Interests

During his tenure in Brussels, Clowes championed rural interests across Europe and realized the scarcity of voices advocating for sensible countryside policies. He had hoped that Brexit would lead to a departure from stringent continental climate targets and metropolitan preferences. However, he has witnessed the encroachment of developments like the Mallard Pass Solar Farm, which he believes are detrimental to local landscapes.

Opposition to Unjust Regulations

As a motorsport engineer, Clowes is critical of Labour councils that impose ULEZ regulations and speed restrictions, which he argues are unscientific and detrimental to working people. He views these restrictions as a tax on freedom and is determined to prevent their expansion into Stamford and Rutland.

Supporting Small Businesses

Clowes recognizes that small businesses are the backbone of Rutland and is committed to advocating for legislation that would alleviate tax burdens on these businesses. He believes that small shops on the high street are unfairly penalized compared to larger enterprises, which contributes to their closures. By addressing excessive running costs and high energy bills, Clowes aims to support local retailers and ensure a vibrant high street.

Protecting Local Heritage and Addressing Policy Failures

Clowes emphasizes the need to protect the rich history of the constituency, including landmarks such as the Normanton Church on Rutland Water and the site of Isaac Newton’s apple tree. He expresses frustration with Tory policies that he believes undermine rural interests while prioritizing metropolitan concerns. He criticizes the government’s handling of the Mallard Pass Solar Farm and calls for greater support for farmers, arguing against the trend towards large-scale, impersonal farming operations.

Through his efforts, Chris Clowes seeks to ensure that the values and heritage of Rutland and Stamford are preserved for future generations, despite the challenges posed by current policies and developments.
