George Beglan Biography for Reigate

A Decade of Service and Personal Life

Joseph Fox has dedicated over twelve years to working as a care worker, following a diverse career path prior to that. Divorced and the proud father of four children and three grandchildren, Fox’s personal experiences have shaped his commitment to public service and political activism.

Awakening to the European Project

Joseph Fox’s political awakening began during the Maastricht Treaty era. Disillusioned by the European integration project, he reached out to Sir George Gardiner, then MP for Reigate, pledging his support if Gardiner opposed the Treaty. Gardiner’s alignment with Fox’s views and his subsequent vote against the Treaty deepened Fox’s resolve. His pride in supporting Gardiner in 1997 was unparalleled, marking a significant moment in his political journey.

Involvement with Campaign for an Independent Britain

Fox’s engagement with the Campaign for an Independent Britain, a coalition of EU-realists from various political backgrounds, further clarified his stance on European integration. He quickly recognized that the major political parties were firmly committed to the European Project, leaving little room for dissent within their ranks.

A Long-Standing Commitment to UKIP

Joining UKIP in 1999 marked a pivotal moment in Joseph Fox’s political career. Over the years, he has consistently stood in elections, with annual candidacies from 2000, multiple runs in 2009, and numerous close calls with victory. Despite the challenges and setbacks, Fox’s perseverance has only strengthened his resolve. He humorously notes that while he has yet to win an election, his near victories this year demonstrate significant progress.

Building a Local Presence

Fox attributes some of his recent success to the national swing toward UKIP, but he also credits his extensive local campaigning and media presence for establishing a solid local reputation. His efforts have garnered recognition and support from constituents, reflecting his dedication to the cause and his ability to connect with the community.

Broadening Appeal and Addressing Labour’s Disillusioned

Fox believes that expanding the party’s appeal to former Labour supporters is crucial. He highlights the abandonment of traditional Labour values by New Labour and the resulting disillusionment among many who once trusted in the promises made by Jacques Delors. Fox emphasizes that while the EU is not solely responsible for the economic difficulties faced by many, it has played a significant role. His canvassing efforts reveal a substantial base of support among those affected by economic stagnation, underscoring UKIP’s potential beyond its traditional conservative base.

Commitment to Honesty

Joseph Fox remains steadfast in his commitment to honesty in politics. He asserts that truth is the most powerful weapon against political adversaries, and he pledges to maintain transparency and integrity in his representation of the constituency.
