Andy McWilliam was raised in Cheshire and Kent, later graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. For the past 44 years, he has lived in Charnwood, primarily practicing dentistry in Leicester, as well as in Shepshed and Barrow upon Soar. He is married to Mary and is now retired, but continues to enjoy a range of interests, including cycling, hill walking, languages, music, sailing, DIY projects, travel, and politics.
Political Background and Involvement
Andy’s political journey began in 2011 when he joined UKIP in response to the lack of an EU referendum. He served as the chairman of the UKIP Loughborough & District branch from 2013 to 2018, and ran for UKIP in the 2015 General Election, securing 17% of the vote in North West Leicestershire. In 2016, he was a key figure in Loughborough's BREXIT campaign, working with various political groups.
In 2017, Andy stood for UKIP again in Loughborough as a democracy candidate. After joining The Brexit Party in 2018, he campaigned vigorously until December 2019. In 2021, he became the East & West Midlands area manager for Reform UK, and in 2022, he was appointed County Organiser for Leicestershire & Rutland. Now, in 2024, Andy is standing as a Parliamentary candidate for the Loughborough constituency.
Key Issues and Political Views
- Population Growth: Andy is deeply concerned about the unsustainable population growth in the UK, which he sees as a fundamental issue driving many national challenges. He advocates for strict immigration controls and a focus on balancing population numbers to ensure a sustainable future.
- Freedom of Speech and Common Sense Politics: A strong believer in free speech, Andy supports policies grounded in common sense and real-world solutions. He is dedicated to ensuring that political discourse remains open and balanced, valuing reason over political correctness.
- Globalisation and Its Dangers: Andy is critical of globalisation, believing it has contributed to a loss of national sovereignty and weakened the UK's position in the world. He seeks to bring control back to the UK, ensuring that decisions impacting the country are made domestically rather than being influenced by global forces.
- Reforming UK Institutions: Andy believes some UK institutions have become overreaching and inefficient. He advocates for significant reforms to bring these bodies back in line with the needs and expectations of the British people.
Vision for Loughborough and the UK
As a candidate for Loughborough, Andy’s vision includes achieving a complete BREXIT where UK laws fully govern the country. He supports net-zero immigration with a “one in, one out” policy, allowing entry for essential skills that cannot be readily trained domestically. He advocates for an immigration system that ensures those arriving illegally are processed offshore and returned if they reject the legal route.
In addition, Andy calls for an energy policy that strengthens UK industry, reducing reliance on foreign economies such as China and India. He is critical of the current “Net Zero” policy, labeling it "Net Stupid" due to its perceived negative impact on UK economic growth.
Ending Multiculturalism and Addressing Housing
Andy argues for the integration of cultures based on English values, laws, and language, stating that while every culture matters, the primary focus should be on English identity. He sees multiculturalism as creating division and believes a unified national identity is essential.
He also emphasizes that Loughborough’s housing challenges are not a result of a housing shortage but rather a population crisis. To address this, Andy seeks long-term solutions to manage population growth and ensure adequate housing supply for future generations.
