John Burmicz Biography for Hertford and Stortford

Early Life and Background

John Burmicz was born in North London and currently resides with his wife in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. His professional journey began with a chemistry training at London University, leading him to run a small business specializing in pharmaceutical testing equipment.

Family Heritage and Influence

John's mother, an English dress designer who survived World War II while much of her family did not, worked for the renowned studio Susan Small. Her brothers, both skilled instrument makers, contributed significantly to wartime efforts, with one making artificial horizons for the RAF and the other sextants for the Royal Navy. Tragically, both perished in the Blitz.

John's father, a Polish national, endured a Siberian Gulag until 1941, when he was permitted to travel to Jerusalem. Despite being underage, he joined the army and later served as a navigator in the RAF's 301 Bomber Squadron. His experience underscores the Polish airmen's view of England as the "island of last hope." Many Polish airmen, including John’s father, were allowed to remain in England after the war, escaping the grim fate of those returning to Soviet-occupied Poland. This experience was deeply influenced by the loss of John's great-grandfather and his brother, who were executed by Bolsheviks in the early 20th century.

Commitment to Community and Service

John's upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of duty and responsibility, values deeply rooted in his father's privileged pre-war Polish background. His commitment to these principles is evident in his involvement in local politics, including serving as Mayor of Sawbridgeworth. During his tenure, John supported the RAF ATC Squadron No. 309, a Polish wartime reconnaissance unit, and admired its inspirational leadership and youth training programs.

Community Involvement and Philanthropy

John has been actively involved in local charitable work, previously serving as a trustee for a local Day Centre. His efforts focused on raising funds and securing sponsorships to support elderly citizens who relied on the center for social interaction and essential services.

Recently, John was honored with an invitation to join a Guild in the City of London. This role allows him to contribute to preserving heritage, managing a poverty fund, and supporting skill development for young people. His involvement also includes aiding soup kitchens and providing sustenance to those in need.

Support for Veterans and Historical Preservation

John and his wife actively support the Battle of Britain Memorial Fund in Capel-le-Ferne, making annual contributions to honor those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. John also lays a wreath each July on behalf of the Polish Airforce Family and Friends Charity (PAFF), where he serves as a trustee.

Core Values

Duty and Honor are fundamental principles in John Burmicz’s life, reflecting his family's legacy and his personal commitment to service and community.
