Richards Entry into Politics
Tice’s political career began as a vocal supporter of the Leave campaign during the 2016 Brexit referendum. News & Updates About Reform UK
Encouraging Business Leaders to Enter Politics
Britain needs successful individuals from business and other sectors to engage in politics to drive meaningful change. By bringing their expertise and leadership skills, these professionals can help improve how the country is run, ensuring that government operations benefit the people rather than serving their own interests.
The Need for Reform in the UK
There are numerous areas in the UK that require significant reform, particularly in how the government and civil service function. It's crucial that these institutions work for the people, and not merely serve themselves. The COVID-19 crisis has laid bare many of the shortcomings in the public sector, highlighting the need for strong leadership and decisive action.
Facing Challenges in Politics
Stepping into the political arena isn't without its difficulties. Politics can be rough, with its day-to-day challenges and the scrutiny it brings. Beyond the typical hurdles, I’ve faced other obstacles, including public criticism and legal challenges that emerged after I openly supported Brexit. In 2016, HMRC launched a surprising investigation into my taxes, just as the referendum campaign gained momentum. Despite this scrutiny, the inquiry concluded with me being owed a refund, proving the baseless nature of their investigation.
Overcoming Unwarranted Scrutiny
Having done business globally and always fulfilled my tax obligations, the unexpected and aggressive inquiry from HMRC seemed like a targeted response to my political stance. Despite applying to view my HMRC files under the Data Protection Act, I was denied access twice. This lack of transparency raised concerns, but eventually, the investigation confirmed that I had overpaid my taxes.
Combatting False Accusations and Defamation
Politics is not always fair. In 2019, I became the subject of false claims from various groups, including a left-wing lobby funded by charities, and even defamatory comments from a Scottish MEP. However, justice prevailed as public apologies were issued and damages were paid to charity. Similarly, BBC Newsnight was forced to retract and apologize for baseless allegations made against me.
The Dark Side of Election Campaigns
The 2019 General Election exposed the lengths some media outlets would go to undermine my political candidacy. Channel 4 repeatedly broke election laws in undercover efforts to smear my reputation. Unfortunately, dirty tactics remain a part of traditional politics, even in a democratic country like the UK.
